I feel that Ethan is causing all this rift. Ethan always needed somebody to be with whenever he is lonely. Just like when his mother died, he needed Zeena for company. He now needed Mattie, because he was feeling lonely caring for his sickley wife. I'm neither team Zeena or Team Mattie. I believe they both had their own faults. Mattie went along with the temptation and Zeena was being jealous and pushing Ethan further away from her.
I think ethan has been using Zeena. when Ethan married Zeena he was lonely. And when Zeena got sick he felt lonely again so he started to have feelings for Mattie.
