I didn't think that Ethan should had lied to Zeena about the reason why he couldn't drop her off. She could have gotten suspicious of why he didn't drop her off. ~Alejandra Guadalupe
I think Ethan shouldn't have married an older woman. He seems to not like the fact that Zeena is older and finds her unattractive. He describes Mattie to be vibrant and young and he likes her more.
I believe that he should have just followed his dream and God would have brought him love later. He probally would have gotten to be with mattie later who knows. But we do know Ethan has a kind heart. He hasnt left zeena because shes old and sick and cant cook or do anyhting for him, when if he wanted to he could have.
I think that Ethan has realized that he mainly loved Zeena because she was all he had, and the fact that she is older makes him find her to be boring. Now that Mattie is in Starkfield, he sees that she is the better match for him emotionally. I also wonder if Mattie feels the same way towards Ethan as he feels towards her.
In my opinion I believe that Mattie posses the characteristics that Ethan hasn't found from his wife Zeena. The fact that Mattie is young, healthy, and understands thoughts as Ethan makes her more desirable then Zeena.
As Zeena’s thoughts about being sick consume her, she becomes the image of her illness. Her constant complaining and the way she dresses makes the reader believe that she is an old dying woman. But to the narrator’s knowledge she is very young. Ethan a man who seems to take love in youth and liveliness sees Zeena as the exact opposite. He sees Zeena as a hag. The paleness and the marks on her face makes me don’t want to be around her.
I feel that Ethan was never in love with Zeena, but only in love with the idea of companionship. Now that Zeena is sick and Ethan is lonely, he seeks for a companionship with Mattie; a vibrant, and healthy young woman.
i agree with everyone's response, but i also think that Ethan only stayed with Zeena because he felt guilty that she took care of his mother. also, Ethan was a young man that had high hopes for the future, and he needs someone who will be there for him, to take care of home, and encourage him. but on the other hand, if he had some one as young as him, they would have their own dreams, and they would only want to have a good time and not really pay attention to his aspirations. afterall, the main reason why people get married is to settle down, and Zeena had exactly that.
Do I think Mattie is wrong for pushing up to Ethan? Yes. Do I feel any sympathy for Zeena for what Ethan’s done? No. Although Zeena is going through this whole "you're flirting with my man" situation, I think Zeena should have the strength of her own to no that she DOES NOT have to be a part of this whole fiasco. If Ethan doesn't want her, he doesn't want her. She needs to live with that. I don't feel any sympathy for those who cry themselves to tears because their cousin is stealing their man. She should just leave him. Not only that but her whole family would have her support all the way because obviously this whole infidelity thing is wrong. -Sherley
